Can I use synthetic oil in my Scion vehicle?

Can I use synthetic oil in my Scion vehicle?

All Scion vehicles come from the factory with natural petroleum-based engine oil. Scion is currently recommending API1 grade SL or ILSAC2 multi-grade petroleum-based engine oil3 for our current model year vehicles. In moderate climates, this oil should have a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) viscosity rating of 5W-30. In our high mileage tests with preventative maintenance performed at the recommended intervals, the recommended natural petroleum-based oil has provided excellent service.

If you decide to use synthetic oil for the engine, it is best not to switch until the first scheduled oil change. Synthetic oil should meet or exceed the specifications provided in your Owner's Manual. Even if synthetic oil is used, we DO NOT recommend a longer oil change interval. If you wish to choose to switch back and forth, please contact the manufacturer of the synthetic oil you have been using to see whether or not this is recommended. Please make sure you use the same weight and viscosity specifications as seen in your Owner's Manual in order to keep your warranty intact.

How can I get some extra length in my seat belt?

How can I get some extra length in my seat belt?

If you find it necessary to increase the length of your seat belts, you may obtain Seat Belt Extenders at no cost through your local Scion dealership.

The extender is available in 6 inch, 9 inch, 12 inch, 15 inch, and 18-inch lengths.
The extender is only available only in black.

You must visit a Scion dealership to have the required measurements made and to complete a Seat Belt Extender Worksheet. The Worksheet will allow the proper fitting and selection of a Seat Belt Extender.

The dealer will take measurements while you are seated in the vehicle and then order the seat belt extender from Scion at no charge. Extenders are available to people who need extra length only; they cannot be provided as child seat accessories or for the disabled. Also, the seatbelt extender would be for your use and in your Scion vehicle only. The extender must not be shared with other persons or used in another vehicle; serious injuries can occur if these seatbelt extenders are misused. This is because the fit and positioning of the seatbelt is critical to ensure proper restraint performance in the event of an accident.

The antenna must be installed as far away as possible from all vehicle ECM's or other onboard computer/sensors.
The antenna cabling must be routed no closer than 20cm(7-7/8 inches) from any ECM or onboard computer/sensors.
Antenna and power cabling must not be routed along side or in conjunction w/ the vehicles wire harness. It is always preferable to cross vehicle harness at right angles when possible. Antenna and antenna cabling should be properly adjusted to obtain the lowest possible standing wave ration (SWR).
Note: It must be emphasized that, under the terms of Scion's new vehicle warranty, any damage caused by RF energy from a higher power mobile radio is specifically excluded from coverage because it is not the result of faulty materials or workmanship. What does Scion recommend in protecting vehicles from acid rain?

Paint can be damaged by industrial fallout, acid rain, etc. If the car is in an area where this can occur, it is wise to wash the car regularly to minimize potential damage. The more fallout, the more frequent the washing should be. If there is acidic or caustic fallout on the paint, the car should be washed with baking soda and water. Baking soda neutralizes both acidic and caustic compounds. A high quality wax should be used as often as is needed to keep water beading on the paint surface. If there is damage to the paint, then a body shop can perform appropriate repairs depending on the type of damage.

What type of coolant does Scion recommend?

What type of coolant does Scion recommend?

Ethylene-glycol type coolant should be used in your Scion vehicle, as it provides for proper corrosion protection of aluminum components, protection at lower temperatures, and it has the ability to be used year round.

Scion recommends Genuine Toyota "Super Long Life Antifreeze Coolant" (factory pink fluid) as the first choice when maintaining your vehicle. Scion coolant was developed to meet the specific requirements of our engines and provides maximum protection without the use of harmful silicates. Silicates, a main ingredient in the vast majority of antifreeze coolants, can actually damage the water pump seal, causing leakage. Our coolant is a high-performance, non-silicate coolant that provides better protection for metals without deterioration of the water pump seal. Genuine Toyota Super Long Life Antifreeze Coolant is available at your local Scion dealership.

How do I check my vehicle's Automatic Transmission Fluid?

How do I check my vehicle's Automatic Transmission Fluid?

CHECKING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
TOOLS AND SUPPLIES:
Automatic Transmission fluid
Rag or paper towels
Funnel

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Check the fluid level when the transmission is hot (normal operating temperature).
If the vehicle has been driven over 10 miles or 16 km (15 miles or 24 km in frigid temperatures) and the fluid temperature is 160-175 degrees F, 70-80 degrees C, the transmission is hot.
If the vehicle has just been driven for a long time at high speed or in city traffic in hot weather, or if the vehicle has been pulling a trailer, an accurate fluid level cannot be obtained. Check the level after the fluid has cooled down (about 30 minutes).
You may check the level when the transmission is cold. If the vehicle has not been driven for over five hours and the fluid is about room temperature 70-85 degrees F, 20-30 degrees C, the transmission is cold. However, checking a cold transmission is to be used for your reference only and the transmission must be checked again for correct level at normal operating temperature.

2. Step-by-step procedures.
a. With the vehicle level, first set the parking brake and then start the engine.
b. While the engine is idling, depress the brake pedal and shift the selector lever into each range from "P" to "L" and return to "P".
c. With the engine still idling, check the fluid level and condition on the automatic transmission fluid dipstick.
d. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag (be careful, fluid is hot).
e. Reinsert the dipstick -- push it in as far as it will go.
f. Pull the dipstick out and look at the fluid level. If the transmission is hot, the fluid level should be in the "HOT" range on the dipstick. Similarly, if it is cold, the level should be in the "COOL" range.
g. While checking the fluid level, also check the condition. If the fluid is black or if it smells burnt, have it changed.

CAUTION: Moving parts like the fan blade and drive belts, as well as extreme heat in the engine compartment or from the exhaust system, can result in serious injury.
Approach with caution and care.
Never take short cuts.
Improper servicing may damage your Scion and lead to personal injury.
Unless you have the proper knowledge, equipment and tools, have your local Scion dealership perform the repairs and maintenance.

3. If the level is low, add the appropriate automatic transmission fluid for your vehicle.
If the level is at the low side of either range, add the appropriate automatic transmission fluid for your vehicle to bring the level within the range. (Fluid is added through the dipstick tube, using a funnel.)

NOTE: Avoid overfilling, or the transmission could be damaged.
Disclaimer: There are many variations in the step-by-step procedures used when checking fluid levels, and varying skill levels of individuals. These instructions cannot anticipate all circumstances or provide advice and caution on each. If you are in doubt concerning your ability or have any questions, consult your local Scion dealership and have the work performed by an experienced technician.

What is ABS?

What is ABS?

ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) is a sophisticated computer-controlled system that modulates brake pressure during hard braking to help avoid wheel lock-up and maintain steering control. When the wheels are beginning to lock, the computer causes the brakes to pulse more rapidly than is humanly possible. This allows the wheels to rotate rather than skid, helping to provide better stopping and steering control. When the ABS is engaged, it is not uncommon for the driver to detect a slight pulsation through the brake pedal.

What can I do to get maximum performance from my Scion vehicle during cold weather?

What can I do to get maximum performance from my Scion vehicle during cold weather?

Scion vehicles are designed to operate in a variety of temperatures. If you reside in a cold area the following general tips may help to increase performance. For items specific to your vehicle please refer to the Starting and Driving, Winter Driving Tips section of your Owner's Manual.

Try to keep the vehicle garaged. Even an unheated garage will usually retain some of the heat given off by the vehicle after it has been driven and parked inside.
Consider using a block heater when the vehicle is parked. This optional device is installed in the engine block and can be plugged into a wall socket. It has a small heating element that prevents the engine from getting very cold (the engine may not feel warm to the touch). Block heaters may be available through your local Scion/Toyota dealership.

Make sure you have the proper freeze protection and engine coolant.
Your coolant must contain ethylene-glycol type coolant for the proper corrosion protection of aluminum components. Use "Toyota Genuine Super Long Life Coolant" or equivalent.

NOTE: Do not use alcohol type antifreeze or plain water alone.
When it is extremely cold, we recommend using 60% solution for your Scion, to provide protection down to about -50C (-58F). Do not use more than 70% solution for better coolant performance.

Check the condition of the battery and cables.
Cold temperatures reduce the capacity of any battery, so it must be in top shape to provide enough power for winter starting. Your local Scion/Toyota dealership and most service stations will be pleased to check the level of charge.
In extremely low temperatures, check the charge more frequently if driving repeated short trips. Shorter trips may not allow sufficient time for the alternator to recharge the battery.

Make sure the engine oil viscosity is suitable for the cold weather.
Leaving heavy summer oil in your vehicle during winter months may cause harder starting.
SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for your vehicle, for good fuel economy, and good starting in cold weather. If you use SAE 10W-30-engine oil in extremely low temperatures, the engine may become difficult to start.
If you are not sure about which oil to use, contact your local Scion dealership.
Keep the door locks from freezing.

Squirt lock de-icer or glycerin into the locks to keep them from freezing. To open a frozen lock, try heating the key before inserting it.
Use a washer fluid containing an anti-freeze solution.
This product is available at your local Scion dealership and most auto parts stores. Follow the manufacturer's directions for how much to mix with water.

NOTE: Do not use engine antifreeze or any other substitute because it may damage your vehicle's paint.
Do not use your parking brake when there is a possibility it could freeze.
When parking, put the transmission into "P" (automatic) or into first or reverse (manual) and block the front wheels. Do not use the parking brake, or snow or water accumulated in and around the parking brake mechanism may freeze, making it hard to release.

Keep ice and snow from accumulating under the fenders.
Ice and snow built up under your fenders can make steering difficult. During bad winter driving, stop and check under the fenders occasionally.

Use the air conditioning to help decrease humidity levels and moisture evaporation that cause window fogging.
For maximum effectiveness, airflow should be directed toward the windshield by turning the airflow selector to the floor/windshield position. This position turns on the defogging function with the purpose of clearing the front view.
This position allows the air intake to select the fresh air or air conditioning automatically to help clear the front view more quickly. The temperature should be set to warm.

Depending on where you are driving, we recommend you carry some emergency equipment.
Some of the things you might put in the vehicle are:
Tire chains
Window scraper
Bag of sand or salt
Flares
Small shovel
Jumper cables

Please refer to your Owner's Manual for additional information regarding coolant type, battery inspection, and oil viscosity

What type of keys come with my tC?

What type of keys come with my tC?

Your vehicle is supplied with two kinds of keys.

1. Master keys
These keys work in every lock. Your Scion dealer will need one of them to make a new key with a built-in transponder chip.

2. Sub key
This key will not work in the glove box. A transponder chip for engine immobilizer system has been placed in the head of the master and sub keys. These chips are needed to enable the system to function correctly, so be careful not to lose these keys. If you make your own duplicate key, you will not be able to cancel the system or start the engine.

To protect items locked in the glove box when using valet parking, leave the sub key with the attendant. Since the side doors can be locked without a key, you should always carry a spare master key in case you accidentally lock your keys inside the vehicle.

For information on use of the wireless remote control key, see "Wireless remote control" on page 11 of the Owner's Manual.

NOTICE: When using a key containing a transponder chip, observe the following precautions. When starting the engine, do not use the key with a key ring resting on the key grip and do not press the key ring against the key grip. Otherwise the engine may not start, or may stop soon after it starts.

What is the factory recommendation to have the timing chain replaced?

What is the factory recommendation to have the timing chain replaced?

To receive satisfactory performance of your Scion vehicle, it is important that maintenance service is performed, as is stated in the Scion Scheduled Maintenance Guide. Maintenance other than the first 3 services are at the expense of the owner. Engine tune-up, lubrication, cleaning and polishing, replacement of filters, coolant, spark plugs, fuses, worn wiper blades, and worn brake pads and linings, or clutch linings are some of the normal maintenance services that all vehicles require.

Scion does NOT have a recommended time to change the timing chain. However, if it becomes elongated, it can make a slapping or rattling noise, which would be an indication to check the chain as well as the tensioner and guide. If it has become too elongated, the chain will need to be replaced. If the tensioner and guide have excessive wear, they will need to be replaced. At some point, if head work is done or if the engine is rebuilt, the timing chain, tensioner, and guide should be checked and replaced as needed.

    Vehicle Stability Control System

What is the Vehicle Stability Control system?

    Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system

The vehicle stability control system helps provide integrated control of the systems such as an anti-lock brake system, traction control, engine control, etc. This system automatically controls the brakes and engine to help prevent the vehicle from skidding when cornering on a slippery road surface or operating steering wheel abruptly.

This system activates when the vehicle speed is about more than 15 km/h (9 mph).

You may hear a sound in the engine compartment for a few seconds just after the vehicle begins to move. This means that the system is in the self-check mode, but does not indicate a malfunction.

    CAUTION

If the vehicle is going to skid during driving, the slip indicator light blinks and an alarm sounds intermittently. Special care should be taken while driving.

The slip indicator light comes on for a few seconds when the ignition key is turned to "ON". If the indicator light does not come on when the ignition is turned on, contact your Scion dealer.

"VSC" warning light This light warns that there is a problem somewhere in the vehicle stability control system or the traction control system.

The light will come on when the ignition key is turned to "ON" and will go off after a few seconds.

If the light comes on while driving, the vehicle stability control system and traction control system do not work. However, as conventional braking operates when applied, there is no problem to continue your driving.

    Types of tires

    Types of tires

Determine what kind of tires your vehicle is originally equipped with.

    1. Summer tires
Summer tires are high-speed capability tires best suited to highway driving under dry conditions. Since summer tires do not have the same traction performance as snow tires, summer tires are inadequate for driving on snow-covered or icy roads. For driving on snow- covered or icy roads, we recommend using snow tires. If installing snow tires, be sure to replace all four tires.

    2. All season tires
All season tires are designed to provide better traction in snow and to be adequate for driving in most winter conditions, as well as for use all year round. All season tires, however, do not have adequate traction performance compared with snow tires in heavy or loose snow. Also, all season tires fall short in acceleration and handling performance compared with summer tires in highway driving. The details about how to distinguish summer tires from all season tires are described on page 125.

CAUTION: Do not mix summer and all season tires on your vehicle as this can cause dangerous handling characteristics, resulting in loss of control. Do not use tires other than the manufacturer's designated tires, and do not mix the tires or wheels of the sizes different from the originally equipped tires and wheels.

    Winter driving tips

    Winter driving tips

Make sure your coolant is properly protected against freezing. Only use "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology. See "Checking the engine coolant level" on page 188 xA; 192 xB for details of coolant type selection.

"Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" is premixed with 50% coolant and 50% distilled water. This coolant provides protection down to about -35C (-31F). NOTICE: Do not use plain water alone. When it is extremely cold, we recommend to use 60% solution for your Scion, to provide protection down to about-50C (-58F). Do not use more than 70% solution for better coolant performance.

Check the condition of the battery and cables. Cold temperatures reduce the capacity of any battery, so it must be in top shape to provide enough power for winter starting. Section 7-3 tells you how to visually inspect the battery. Your Scion dealer and most service stations will be pleased to check the level of charge.

Make sure the engine oil viscosity is suitable for the cold weather. See page 187 xA; 191 xB for recommended viscosity. Leaving a heavy summer oil in your vehicle during winter months may cause harder starting. If you are not sure about which oil to use, call your Scion dealer - they will be pleased to help.

Keep the door locks from freezing. Squirt lock de-icer or glycerine into the locks to keep them from freezing. To open a frozen lock, try heating the key before inserting it.

Use a washer fluid containing an antifreeze solution. This product is available at your Scion dealer and most auto parts stores. Follow the manufacturer's directions for how much to mix with water. NOTICE: Do not use engine antifreeze or any other substitute because it may damage your vehicle's paint.

Do not use your parking brake when there is a possibility it could freeze. When parking, put the transmission into "P" (automatic) or into first or reverse (manual) and block the rear wheels.

Depending on where you are driving, we recommend you carry some emergency equipment. Some of the things you might put in your vehicle are tire chains, window scraper, bag of sand or salt, flares, small shovel, jumper cables. etc.

If your engine stalls while driving

If your engine stalls while driving

    1. Reduce your speed gradually, keeping a straight line. Move cautiously off the road to a safe place.

    2. Turn on your emergency flashers.

    3. Try starting the engine again. If the engine will not start, see "If your vehicle will not start" on page 144 xA, 146 xB.

CAUTION: If the engine is not running, the power assist for the brakes and steering will not work so steering and braking will be much harder than usual.

    Emergency Towing

    Emergency Towing

If towing is necessary, we recommend you have it done by your Scion dealer or a commercial tow truck service. If a towing service is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may be temporarily towed by a cable or chain secured to either the emergency towing eyelet on the front or the rear of the vehicle. Use extreme caution when towing vehicles.

To install the towing eyelet, see "-Installing towing eyelet" on page 161 xA; page 164 xB. NOTICE: Only use specified towing eyelet; otherwise your vehicle may be damaged.

A driver must be in the vehicle to steer it and operate the brakes. Towing in this manner may be done only on hard- surfaced roads for a short distance and at low speeds. Also, the wheels, axles, drive train, steering and brakes must all be in good condition.

CAUTION: Use extreme caution when towing vehicles. Avoid sudden starts or erratic driving maneuvers which would place excessive stress on the emergency towing eyelets and towing cable or chain. The eyelets and towing cable or chain may break and cause serious injury or damage. NOTICE: Use only a cable or chain specifically intended for use in towing vehicles. Securely fasten the cable or chain to the towing eyelet provided.

Before towing, release the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral (manual) or "N" (automatic). The key must be in "ACC" (engine off) or "ON" (engine running). CAUTION: If the engine is not running, the power assist for the brakes and steering will not work so steering and braking will be much harder than usual.

    Installing snow tires and chains

    Installing snow tires and chains

Snow tires or chains are recommended when driving on snow or ice. On wet or dry roads, conventional tires provide better traction than snow tires.

SNOW TIRE SELECTION: If you need snow tires, select tires of the same size, construction and load capacity as the originally installed tires. Do not use tires other than those mentioned above. Do not install studded tires without first checking local regulations for possible restrictions.

CAUTION: Observe the following instructions. Otherwise, an accident may occur resulting in death or serious injuries. Do not use snow tires other than the manufacturers recommended size, as this may cause dangerous handling characteristics resulting in loss of control.

SNOW TIRE INSTALLATION: Snow tires should be installed on all wheels. Installing snow tires on the front wheels only can lead to an excessive difference in road grip capability between the front and rear tires which could cause loss of vehicle control. When storing removed tires you should store them in a cool dry place. Mark the direction of rotation and be sure to install them in the same direction when replacing.

CAUTION: Do not drive with the snow tires incorrectly inflated. Never drive over 120 km/h (75 mph) with any type of snow tires.

TIRE CHAIN SELECTION: Use the tire chains of correct size and type. Use SAE Class S type radial tire chains except radial cable chains or Vbar type chains. Regulations regarding the use of tire chains vary according to location or type of road, so always check the local regulations before installing chains.

CHAIN INSTALLATION: Install the chains on the front tires as tightly as possible. Do not use tire chains on the rear tires. Retighten chains after driving 0.51.0 km (1/41/2 mile). When installing chains on your tires, carefully follow the instructions of the chain manufacturer. If wheel covers are used, they will be scratched by the chain band, so remove the covers before putting on the chains.

CAUTION: Do not exceed 50 km/h (30 mph) or the chain manufacturers recommended speed limit, whichever is lower. Drive carefully avoiding bumps, holes, and sharp turns, which may cause the vehicle to bounce. Avoid sharp turns or locked wheel braking, as use of chains may adversely affect vehicle handling. When driving with chains installed, be sure to drive carefully. Slow down before entering curves to avoid losing control of the vehicle. Otherwise an accident may occur.

NOTICE: Do not attempt to use a tire chain on the compact spare tire, as it may result in damage to the vehicle as well as the tire.

What can cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp/check engine light to come on?

The MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp), also referred to as the check engine light, illuminates in three general cases:

    1. The fuel tank is completely empty
    2. The fuel cap is loose, or not properly secured
    3. There is a concern within the engine, or automatic transmission electrical system
Under case "c", the number of conditions that may illuminate the MIL is extensive. The factory Repair Manual for your vehicle provides more detailed information in this regard.

If the MIL comes on while driving in case "c", it is recommended to have your vehicle diagnosed and, if necessary, repaired as soon as possible by your local Scion/Toyota dealership. A full evaluation of the vehicle by a qualified technician will be necessary to clearly determine the reason why the MIL illuminated.

Why do I sometimes feel a static electrical shock when exiting my vehicle?

Why do I sometimes feel a static electrical shock when exiting my vehicle?

A common occurrence in any automobile, a small static electrical shock may be felt when an electrical conductor such as metal (your car door) is touched after exiting the vehicle. This occurs because of the difference in the electrical potential that is produced when your clothing rubs against the seat. In order to avoid this shock, you can ground yourself by touching a metal part of the vehicle when exiting.

What causes the sulfur odor in my exhaust?

What causes the sulfur odor in my exhaust?

A sulfur odor emitted from the vehicles tailpipe does not necessarily indicate that there is an issue with the engines running condition. It is most likely directly related to the fuel. Sulfur is a natural component of crude oil from which gasoline is refined, and the amount of sulfur can be decreased through the refining process. While the amount of sulfur in fuel sold in California is regulated, gasoline sold in other states can have substantially higher sulfur content. Sulfur content may vary between gasoline brands and locations; switching gasoline brands may help. The more sulfur present in the gasoline, the stronger the sulfur odor can be. In order to properly assess your vehicle, we recommend you contact the Customer Relations Manager at your local Toyota/Scion dealership.

How long should the original tires on my vehicle last?

How long should the original tires on my vehicle last?

Tire life is affected by many factors including maintenance services such as wheel alignment, tire rotation and proper inflation pressure as well as driving habits. It can also vary due to differences in climates and road conditions. To increase the longevity of the tires on your vehicle, it is recommended that you maintain your vehicle and tires according to the recommendations listed in your Owner's Manual or Scheduled Maintenance Guide. The Department of Transportation establishes a treadwear grade for tires based on its comparative wear rate when tested under carefully controlled conditions. As an example, a tire with a grade of 300 should last twice as long as a tire with a grade of 150 on the government test course. However, the actual mileage your tires last depends on the conditions of their use and maintenance. The treadwear rating for your tires can be found on the sidewall of your tires. Also, for a comprehensive list of treadwear ratings from the Department of Transportation, you can view the Uniform Tire Quality Grading Report on their website.

Can I change the size of tires I use on my vehicle?

Toyota/Scion does not recommend modifying the vehicle in any manner, including changing the original tire size or the suspension. Toyota/Scion vehicles meet all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards when they are originally distributed, and modification could affect the safety and/or operation of the vehicle and remove it from compliance with specifications and standards mandated by the Federal Government. Additionally, should a condition occur on the vehicle that can be attributed to any type of modification, the warranty on the affected components may be impacted or void.

The sales brochure refers to a diversity antenna; what is this?

The sales brochure refers to a diversity antenna; what is this?

A diversity antenna is a system comprised of two antennas. In many applications, this includes a conventional mast-type antenna, along with a glass-imprinted antenna. Occasionally, this system may feature two glass-imprinted antennas.

The radio receiver will draw from which ever antenna is receiving the strongest signal at the time. If the signal deteriorates due to interference, the system automatically switches to the other antenna.

This system maintains optimum reception by preventing large objects such as buildings from blocking the radio waves received by the antennas.

Why does my vehicle seem to perform differently when it's cold, compared to when it warms up?

Why does my vehicle seem to perform differently when it's cold, compared to when it warms up?

Toyota/Scion vehicles incorporate a sophisticated emissions system that works with the Engine Control Module (ECM) to warm the engine as quickly as possible by running it at high revolutions per minute (RPM) at idle, and by delaying upshifting on vehicles with an automatic transmission. Delaying upshifts keeps the cold engine's RPM higher while driving.

Emissions are highest when the engine is cold because the catalytic converter needs to be at a high operating temperature in order to function effectively. To get the engine and emissions system warmed as quickly as possible, the fast engine RPM at idle and delayed upshift continue until optimum operating temperature is reached. Normal idle speed and automatic transmission shifting return when the engine and emissions systems are warmed to operating temperature.

Why doesn't my vehicle get the estimated gas mileage, or estimated mpg?

EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) gas mileage estimates are generated under controlled testing conditions. Fuel efficiency is influenced by many variables including, but not limited to, quality and octane level of gasoline, fuel additives or seasonal variations in fuel, load carried in the vehicle, tire pressure, terrain, locale (urban/suburban), driving style, and even weather conditions.

If you would like to further discuss your gas mileage concerns, please contact the Customer Relations Manager at your local Scion/Toyota dealership.

How do I check my vehicle's Automatic Transmission Fluid?

How do I check my vehicle's Automatic Transmission Fluid?

    CHECKING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL

    TOOLS AND SUPPLIES:

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. Check the fluid level when the transmission is hot (normal operating temperature).

    1. If the vehicle has been driven over 10 miles or 16 km (15 miles or 24 km in frigid temperatures) and the fluid temperature is 160-175 degrees F, 70-80 degrees C, the transmission is hot.
    2. If the vehicle has just been driven for a long time at high speed or in city traffic in hot weather, or if the vehicle has been pulling a trailer, an accurate fluid level cannot be obtained. Check the level after the fluid has cooled down (about 30 minutes).
    1. With the vehicle level, first set the parking brake and then start the engine.
    2. While the engine is idling, depress the brake pedal and shift the selector lever into each range from "P" to "L" and return to "P".
    3. With the engine still idling, check the fluid level and condition on the automatic transmission fluid dipstick.
    4. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag (be careful, fluid is hot).
    5. Reinsert the dipstick -- push it in as far as it will go.
    6. Pull the dipstick out and look at the fluid level. If the transmission is hot, the fluid level should be in the "HOT" range on the dipstick. Similarly, if it is cold, the level should be in the "COOL" range.
    7. While checking the fluid level, also check the condition. If the fluid is black or if it smells burnt, have it changed.
CAUTION: Moving parts like the fan blade and drive belts, as well as extreme heat in the engine compartment or from the exhaust system, can result in serious injury.

How do I check the engine oil?

How do I check the engine oil?

To ensure that the engine oil is at the optimum level so that oil function will not be impaired, it is essential to check the oil level regularly. Toyota/Scion recommends that the oil level be checked every time you refuel the vehicle.

With the engine at operating temperature and turned off, check the oil level on the engine oil dipstick.

    1. To get a true reading, the vehicle should be on a level spot. After turning off the engine, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the bottom of the engine.
    2. Pull out the dipstick, and wipe it clean with a rag.
    3. Reinsert the dipstick push it in as far as it will go, or the reading will not be correct.
    4. Pull the dipstick out and look at the oil level on the end.
If the oil level is below or slightly above the low level line, add engine oil using the same type already in the engine. Caution:

For additional information, please refer to the Do-It-Yourself Maintenance section of your Owners Manual. For engine oil change interval information, please refer to your Scheduled Maintenance Guide.

Regular grade fuel may be your best option, if, based on your driving conditions and driving style, you don't notice a difference in performance or economy between regular and premium. Engine knock can be affected by many variables, such as ambient temperature, vehicle load, hill climbing, and acceleration rate. As a result of these variables, we do not have performance comparison information for regular versus premium grade fuel.

The "Octane Rating" referred to in the Scion Owner's manuals refers to the octane numbers posted on fuel pumps as determined by the (R+M)/2 method. This is the method required by U.S. Federal regulations. The "Research Octane Number" referred to in Scion Owner's Manuals is a standard used outside of the U.S. The Octane Rating number is the result of an average of two tests that are outlined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The ASTM specifies three grades of unleaded automotive gasoline for general use:

The fuel octane recommendation for Scion vehicles is Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane number 91) or higher.

Why does my air conditioning smell?

Why does my air conditioning smell?

During air conditioner operation, cold refrigerant is pumped through the evaporator core by an engine driven compressor. Then a fan blows passenger-compartment air through fins to cool the air. Besides chilling the air, these fins also act as an air filter, trapping bacteria, spores, and dirt. Airborne particles are normally washed out a drain hole with condensation, but if they remain on the evaporator, the bacteria may collect and cause the unpleasant odor. This situation is not isolated to Scion; it is an industry-wide condition.

How can I minimize the air conditioning smell from occurring?

How can I minimize the air conditioning smell from occurring?

There are ways to minimize the odor. Whenever possible, use the outside air setting on your unit rather than the recirculated air setting. Try to avoid parking under trees; this will reduce the possibility of leaves entering the air intakes. Whenever feasible, drive on paved routes as dusty roads may accelerate the condition. We encourage you to contact your local Scion dealership for a thorough evaluation of the condition you are experiencing.

I would like to add an after market accessory or part to my vehicle, will this impact my warranty?

Warranty coverage is not dependent upon the use of any particular brand of replacement parts. However, Toyota/Scion recommends using only Genuine Toyota Parts when you need to replace a part on your vehicle. Non-Genuine Toyota Parts, or any damage or failures resulting from their use, are not covered by any Toyota/Scion warranty.
